Cooperating in the sampling survey of "ANEMONE DB (Anemone Database)," big data from fish surveys using environmental DNA
As part of the NYK Group, we have decided to cooperate in collecting seawater samples for the "ANEMONE DB (Anemone Database)," a big data collection project conducted by NYK, Tohoku University, Minamisanriku Town, and the non-profit organization Earthwatch Japan, using environmental DNA to conduct fish surveys.
Environmental DNA is an innovative biological survey method developed in Japan that can reveal the types and distribution of living organisms from just a bucket of water. The "ANEMONE DB" is a database based on environmental DNA established in Japan, and is expected to be utilized in a wide range of industries as a "weather map for living things." Since 2017, approximately 200 researchers and citizen volunteers have conducted 4,298 environmental DNA fish surveys at 861 locations nationwide , building up big data. Now, in a world first, the data will be made publicly available as open data from June 2, 2022, as announced in a press release on the same day.
Through the sampling of seawater off the coast of Japan aboard the Mashiu, which operates on the Hitachinaka-Tomakomai route, NYK will contribute to further expanding the data in the ANEMONE DB and the scope of the survey, together with NYK Line.
