From Kinyu Ship Management Co., Ltd.

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) is a global ocean-going ship operator that plays a vital role in logistics transportation. As one of its group companies, Kinkai Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (KYK), which protects the domestic maritime transport infrastructure in the Japanese archipelago from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south, owns and manages four RORO carriers as the main fleet of Kinkai Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (KYK), and Kinkai Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (KSK) owns and manages four RORO carriers as the main fleet of KYK's operating ships.

A small but elite group of marine engineers oversees daily operations, including the education and training of ship crews engaged in marine transport, fleet maintenance, and maintenance management. Deeply aware that our business is part of the importance of environmental conservation on a global scale, we work hard day and night to ensure environmentally friendly ship operations and thorough safe operation to prevent marine pollution.

 This time, we will take a change of pace from the local-flavored "Kinyu News" and briefly introduce the work of our organization.

 <Seafarers Division>

The Crew Department is responsible for all crew management tasks, including crew allocation, training, labor management, and crew dispatch for the four RORO carriers. As an example of training for crew members responsible for the safe operation of the ship, we provide a wide range of training at external institutions, including ship-maneuvering simulator training, navigational watchkeeping training, and welding training (see attached photo).

We also actively hire new graduates from maritime education institutions and strive to train them to become future captains and chief engineers.Although the current situation is difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we visit each ship once a year to interview the crew and promote communication between sea and land.

 <Marine Affairs Division>

This department is staffed by experienced captains and navigators, and collects, provides and advises on technology and information related to safe operation, accident prevention and environmental pollution prevention.It also advises the captain on communication between the captain and charterers and other necessary matters.

 We also arrange for nautical charts necessary for navigation and the ship, parts necessary for equipment maintenance, as well as chemicals, paints, and daily necessities for the crew.KSK has acquired voluntary ISM certification and is involved in the maintenance and management of the Safety Management System (SMS), practical work related to each inspection, and regular visits to ships to instruct and confirm that the SMS is being properly operated by the crew, utilizing the PDCA cycle to ensure the safe operation of the ship and providing support activities from shore to improve operations.

<Engineering Division>

Our small but elite team, led by a construction supervisor with experience as chief engineer, is responsible for the maintenance and management of RORO carriers, arranging for the stable supply of consumables necessary for operation, and responding to unexpected breakdowns and problems.The vessels have a gross tonnage of approximately 10,000 to 12,000 tons and an overall length of 170 to 180 meters.With an engine output of approximately 15,000 kW, we strive for stable and safe operation while ensuring regular operation at a speed of over 20 knots (just under 40 km/h).

The main players are, of course, the captain, chief engineer and other crew members of the ship, but to ensure that the ship can be operated safely, we act as the "behind the scenes" by utilizing our experience and high technical skills, communicating with the ship's crew and working diligently day and night to carry out our work quickly and reliably.

Deterioration of engine performance and fouling of the hull lead to increased fuel consumption and directly to increased carbon dioxide emissions. For this reason, we have installed equipment that can monitor the operating condition of the vessel, and we strive to maintain the vessel's condition by remotely monitoring it from land and communicating with the vessel's crew.
