About modal shift

Kinkai Yusen is contributing to the promotion of modal shift. Modal shift is an effort to switch from automobile transportation, which has been the main method up until now, to methods that are less polluting and have a lower impact on the global environment. Maritime transportation, which is highly energy efficient and allows for large-scale transportation, is attracting attention as a means to achieve this.

Concerns about disasters caused by global warming

When people consume fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas, carbon dioxide is released into the air. If greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide continue to increase at this rate, it is predicted that the average global temperature will rise. As a result, there are concerns about rising sea levels, an increase in and expansion of natural disasters (typhoons), changes in ecosystems, an increase in pests, and severe damage to crops.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions

In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is important to reduce fuel consumption. Carbon dioxide emissions from the transportation sector account for approximately 20% of Japan's total, with automobiles accounting for 90% of that. On the other hand, a major advantage of marine transport by ship is that it allows for "bulk mass transport over long-distance trunk routes" in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

To promote modal shift

Shifting long-distance trunk line transport from automobiles to ships will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Promoting this modal shift requires proactive efforts from related industries, and we also need the understanding and cooperation of our customers. Utilizing the characteristics of an island nation surrounded by the sea, we will be a force for building a sustainable society for the future. We look forward to your continued support and support in the future of marine transport.
